Where? 

About 25 minutes from SJO airport (Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose, Costa Rica), you will find beautiful Atenas, Costa Rica - a safe, mountain town full of Costa Rican culture and opportunity! About 1 hour from the beach and 1 hour from the city, it is nestled in the perfect location to immerse in traditional culture while exploring the country.

What can I do there? Co-Create your gap experience... 

  • 30 hours a week of constructive engagement - choose from: 
    • ​Spanish language instruction & immersion
    • Community service projects
    • Internships (in English, Spanish or Spanglish)
    • College classes (in English or Spanish)
  • Schedule fitness and wellness activities such as: yoga, personal training/gym, soccer, biking, jogging, basketball, surf lessons, etc.
  • Sign up for recreational activities and trips (half-day trips, full-day trips, long weekends, or week-long excursions) to explore Costa Rica. 
  • Meet with our Si!GAP coaches and peer support group twice a week to process your experience with staff and peers who walk alongside you through your journey.
  • Engage with a personal local mentor who can show you around town and introduce you to people your age. 
  • Homestay family: Opportunity to live with a local family for a true Costa Rican experience and bonds that will last a lifetime.
  • Opportunity to sign up for optional one on one coaching to help meet your individual goals to prepare you for college or the work world!

How much does it cost? 

$4000/month which includes: 
  • 3-day in-home orientation with Cultural Coordinator’s family to orient to town, language, culture, and individualized program schedule
  • Scheduling coaching once / week
  • 2 check-in meetings / meals per week with coaches & peers
  • 6 hours / week of formal Spanish classes + cultural workshops (cooking, dance, customs, etc.)
  • Recreational travel budget of $400/month to explore Costa Rica
  • Local young adult mentor
  • Homestay Family lodging + 3 meals / day
  • Community service projects
  • Local internships for vocational exploration
 Optional Add-On Experiences & Costs such as: 
  • Specialized Internships outside of our local community
  • College classes at 1 of 3 bilingual universities
  • Extra hours of formal Spanish classes (individual lessons / tutoring)
  • Recreational half-day trips, full-day trips & weekend trips beyond your $400/month budget
  • Certification Courses
  • Adventure Travel = week-long trips 
  • Extra coaching sessions (to manage scheduling and organization)
